Florence's garden

The first project of the Autumn. Eventually I would like to create a sensory,  garden where Florence can explore different textures and smells. I hope that we can all have an input into this so all ideas will be gratefully accepted.

Clearing the area and cutting back the hedge to give some more room.Wire fencing in place to keep the wildlife out.

This is the after photo showing the bamboo screen in place and the ground cleared and level.

Two more before and after shots. The last one shows the mixed edging - sleeper, rock, log pile and log roll
.

I cut the top off the bamboo screen and made two insect hibernation homes.

Log pile showing the insect homes incorporated.

  1. What's the herb that forms ground cover and can tolerate being trodden on? I can't remember, but that could be good on her bare little feet (if she's in the right mood of course). It will have to be a space that can evolve with Florence's development and tolerance. At the moment i would aim for a very calm space where she can take in the natural garden sounds without being scared or distracted by the breeze. Maybe a central chair with a tray where she can be given tactile leaves, rattling seed heads, etc to play with. That would be good because most of her toys are made from synthetic materials at the moment. The Blind Garden in Leigh Library Gardens is good. They grow curry plants there and I think something that smells really powerful and distinctive like that will help her recognise and remember the space and therefore be more relaxed and able to enjoy it the more she visits.

A living willow shelter could be a good way of cutting out the wind. I guess you could grow scented climbers up it too.
